An Post has unveiled two new stamps celebrating Coláistí Samhraidh – also known as the Gaeltacht or Irish College.
Waterford has its own Gaeltacht region - Gaeltacht na nDéise consists of Ring and Old Parish.
Coláiste na Rinne has been one of the big Irish language colleges for young people for over a century, sitting on 25 acres at its campus in West Waterford.
The N rate (National) stamps appear just as most Irish colleges prepare to reopen after the pandemic forced them to stay shut since 2019.
More than 25,000 students will visit Coláistí Samhraidh in almost 40 locations this year.
Stamps to represent Gaeltacht memories
The new stamps feature iconic objects associated with the Coláistí Samhraidh experience; including bacon and cabbage, sport, music, céilí dancing, first loves, fón póca bans, changeable Irish weather and of course – writing and receiving letters!
Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media Catherine Martin said:
‘‘These two stamps are a wonderful way to mark the return of na Coláistí Samhraidh to in-person attendance this Summer. A Summer spent sa Ghaeltacht being immersed in our language and culture is something that many of us, myself included, will have experienced in our youth."
The stamps are designed by Dublin-based firm, Detail.
A special edition First Day Cover envelope is available in selected post offices, all Gaeltacht areas and via the An Post website.
