Anyone who is old enough to remember will be able to tell you exactly where they were when the news came through about the attack on the Twin Towers in New York.

The events

This Saturday, September 11th 2021, marks 20 years since 9 /11. It was a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks by the militant Islamist terrorist group Al Qaeda against the United States of America on the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001. Four commercial airplanes traveling from North Eastern US to California were hijacked mid-flight. The first plane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Centre in Manhattan at 8:46 am. Seventeen minutes later at 9:03 am, the World Trade Center's South Tower was hit by the second plane. Both 110-story towers collapsed within two hours.

A third flight was hijacked over Ohio and crashed into the west side of  The Pentagon in Virginia, causing a partial collapse of the building's side. The fourth and final plane was flown in the direction of Washington DC. This flight was the only plane not to hit its intended target, instead crashing in a field in Pennsylvania.

2,996 people were killed in the attacks.

"9/11 Stories" airs on WLR at 6pm Tuesday September 7th

9 11 anniversary 20 years

In this radio documentary, Geoff Harris speaks to people about 9 / 11, some of whom were directly involved:

Richard ‘Pitch’ Pichiato who was one of the first responders with the New York Fire Service in the 1993 bombing in the World Trade Centre. He describes how the building was nearly demolished after that. Pichiato was again one of the responders for 9 / 11.
Jennifer O’Meara from Waterford visited the observation deck on 9/10 - one of the last people to stand on top of the Towers. She gives her reaction in this compelling documentary.
Kal Ryan from Waterford was on his way to work and was coming up out of the subway in New York, literally as the second plane hit the North Tower.
You can catch the full documentary at 7pm tonight on WLR. You can also listen live on our website, or through our app. In the meantime, here's the opening sequence..
