October is Down Syndrome Awareness month; its purpose is to raise public awareness of this common disorder and champion acceptance, inclusion, and the incredible abilities of people with Down syndrome. It’s a time to celebrate the amazing ability that people with Down syndrome have, by sharing their journey with the wider community. While many host fundraisers throughout the year, October is an extra special month to highlight the dreams, goals, and aspirations people with Down syndrome have just like everyone else.

PHP Precision Health Performance, Cleaboy Road, welcomes members of all levels of fitness and abilities extending to a number of members with Down Syndrome joining in recent years. Dean Roche, owner of PHP, said “I’ve been in the industry a long time and some of my best experiences have been with our members who have down syndrome. For me this fundraiser is all about giving back, so that these guys can continue to break down barriers and stereotypes”.

Down Syndrome Ireland aims to create the environment for people with Down syndrome to achieve their potential, with a particular focus on health, education, employment, and life in the community. Ian Doogue, fundraising committee member of Waterford and South Kilkenny branch and member of PHP gym, explains how the monies raised will directly benefit the down syndrome community in the region. “We’re all aware of the long waiting lists for services such as speech and language therapy, physiotherapy and occupational therapy for people with disabilities which is why fundraisers such as this are so important for the branch and its members. It opens the doors to private services and consultants who can provide early intervention care and advice which is imperative at the early stages of any disability. The local branch is grateful to Dean and the team in PHP for hosting such a fantastic fundraiser and would like to extend our thanks to everyone who has donated”.

21 is a special number signifying the uniqueness of the 21st chromosome which causes down syndrome. The Waterford and South Kilkenny branch often host fundraisers in the region where all are welcome to support and get involved. All proceeds from these fundraising efforts will go directly to those who need it most.
