How Statkraft Ireland Is Leading The Charge In Wind Power

Statkraft Ireland Is Leading The Charge In Wind Power. Wind is one of the easiest ways of generating low-cost electricity and plays an important part in meeting our energy needs.

The key to Ireland’s decarbonisation journey since the early 1990s is Onshore wind farms when the first wind farm was commissioned in Co. Mayo. Today, there are nearly 400 wind farms across the island, and onshore wind farms will play an important role in meeting Ireland’s target of generating 80% of its electricity from renewables by 2030.

Irish wind farms provided 32% of the island’s electricity.

This was highlighted by Wind Energy Ireland over the first eight months of this year, in a recent wind energy report. Windy days mean cheaper energy prices for consumers too. Ireland’s average wholesale electricity price was 60% cheaper than in the same month (September) in 2022. With costs falling even more on the windiest days.

Statkraft has developed a competitive position in wind power and has a proven track record of delivering construction projects on cost and time.

In July 2022, Statkraft Ireland announced that it had powered up Ireland’s first RESS wind farm. The seven-turbine, 23MW, wind farm in Co. Cavan. It was one of the first renewable energy projects in the country to qualify for the Government’s first Renewable Energy Support Scheme (RESS 1) in 2020. Statkraft Ireland announced that the second of its RESS 1 projects was fully operational just eight months later.

The company is currently building two additional onshore wind farms. With a total capacity of 114MW, it delivers more clean, green energy to the Irish grid.

They're also making waves when it comes to offshore wind. In May of this year, alongside its offshore partners, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP). Statkraft secured 500MW to develop the landmark North Irish Sea Array offshore project off the east coast.

The project is proposed for an area off the coast of counties Dublin, Louth, and Meath. It will have the capacity to power approximately half a million Irish homes and businesses. This will help to secure Ireland’s energy future.
