1. No patients with Covid-19 at UHW

The general manager of University Hospital Waterford (UHW) has expressed cautious optimism in relation to the Covid-19 situation at the hospital. For the first time this year, there are no positive in-patients at UHW. At the peak of the hospital covid crisis on January 24th there were 127 patients with the virus on site.

2. Varadkar points towards late summer for ‘pretty much normal’ life

Mr Varadkar said he would hope to see the “vast majority” of Covid-19 restrictions removed by August and a “normal Christmas”. However, the Tánaiste warned that nothing can be promised when it comes to a new virus, and he said he believes restrictions on international travel and gatherings indoors will continue into the autumn.

3. Government under pressure to stop investment funds buying up housing

The purchase of completed housing estates by global institutional investment funds is “unacceptable”, the Taoiseach has said. Micheál Martin has also called on county councils not to engage in long-term leases with such firms. It comes after 135 of the 170 houses in a new housing development in Maynooth, Co Kildare were purchased by two investment funds.

4. Chelsea bid to join Manchester City in Champions League Final

Manchester City romped to their first ever Champions League Final with a convincing win over PSG in Manchester yesterday evening. Hoping to join them in the final is fellow English club Chelsea who host Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge tonight. The two sides go into the second leg on 1 goal apiece.

5. People in Ireland can see shooting stars tonight

Ireland will be lit up by shooting stars tonight as the Earth passes through dust left behind by Halley’s Comet. Stargazers can expect to see around 20 meteors per hour, and they will be visible until the early hours of tomorrow morning.

6. Nick Kamen dead at 59

Nick Kamen, the model and musician who starred in the iconic "Launderette" advert for Levi's in 1985, has passed away. The Essex born model, who was only 23 when the ad was made, went on to have a pop career and even duetted with Madonna. His pal Boy George paid tribute to him today saying "R.I.P to the most beautiful and sweetest man Nick Kamen!"
