1. Confusion over details of July re-opening due to Delta variant
The Tanaiste says he’s sorry if people are confused about the mixed messaging about July’s reopening but that’s the nature of Covid. The resumption of indoor dining and international travel have been thrown into doubt because of concerns about the Delta variant. Different Ministers have been saying different things about whether restrictions can ease next month, causing frustration for business owners. Leo Varadkar says the final announcement will be made at the end of next week.
2. Businessman who wanted to ‘downsize’ by buying abandoned manor houses loses appeal
A businessman who wanted to buy an abandoned manor house with 230 acres has failed in an appeal over his efforts to force the completion of a €1.375 million purchase deal. Anthony Sheedy, who has mining and waste-to-energy businesses in the US, sued after the vendor of Whitfield Manor in Kilmeadan, Co Waterford, pulled out when Mr Sheedy insisted upon certain conditions in the contract, including vacant possession of the lands.
3. Waterford fishermen join protest in Dublin
Protesting fishermen and women say they feel like criminals at work, due to strict regulations on the industry. Over one thousand people along with 70 vessels arrived at the Convention Centre on Dublin’s River Liffey this afternoon, to protest the EU’s low fishing quotas. Ireland will lose over a quarter its mackerel quota by 2025, which workers warn could cost thousands of job over the next few years.
4. All Together Now Festival in County Waterford cancelled
Organisers say they’ve “exhausted all possibilities” to enable the festival to happen this summer. In a post on social media, they said ticket holders can ask for a refund or hold on to their pass for next year’s event, which is due to take place from July 29th-31st, 2022. 5. Barron & Prunty injury concerns ahead of Sunday’s Munster SHC opener
All-star Jamie Barron has emerged as an injury concern as Waterford gear up for the start of the Munster Senior hurling Championship, while captain Conor Prunty came off at half-time with a quad injury in the Tipperary victory two weeks ago. The Déise take on Clare in the Provincial Quarter-Final at Semple Stadium on Sunday
