1. Indoor dining regulations signed off by cabinet and the president
Indoor dining will re-open next Monday with guidelines set to be released to businesses in the coming days. President Michael D Higgins signed the needed legislation into law earlier while Cabinet discussed the issue at its meeting this morning. Pubs and restaurants will have to close at 11.30pm, and work is under way on an app to scan Digital Covid Certs for access.
2. 130 jobs and €90m investment announced for Bausch and Lomb
Bausch + Lomb, today announced plans to invest €90M to expand manufacturing operations at its Waterford facility. The investment is expected to generate 130 additional jobs when production commences in 2023 and will provide the Waterford facility with additional capacity to meet expected demand for its Biotrue ONEday® range of contact lenses.
3. Decision to close Waterford Tourist Centre ‘enraging’
A decision to close Waterford’s Failte Ireland Tourist Information Centre has been described as ‘unfathomable and enraging’ by a local councillor Cllr. Jason Murphy. In a statement, Failte Ireland have said the centre will remain closed for the time being due to ‘low projected footfall’.
4. Des O’Malley, former minister and Progressive Democrats founder, dies aged 82
Des O’Malley, the founder of the Progressive Democrats and former Fianna Fáil minister, has died aged 82. He had been unwell for some time. Mr O’Malley was elected as a TD for Limerick in 1968 and was appointed Minister for Justice during the Arms Crisis of 1970.
5. Temperatures to reach 30 degrees as concerns grow over drinking water supplies
Irish Water has warned a surge in demand for drinking water, coupled with falling supplies, is “not sustainable” and could worsen drought conditions. Water Conservation may affect supply to Ballymacarbry, Fouremilewater, Castlereagh, Clonanav, Knockalisheen. Restrictions are scheduled to take place nightly from 10pm until 7am until 1 August. 6. Trailer drops for The Last Duel filmed in Ireland
Hollywood star Matt Damon stole the hearts of Irish people last year when he spent the first lockdown in Ireland and went swimming in the forty foot. The actor was in the country to film The Last Duel, which had production delayed due to the Coronavirus. Well the movie finally got made and the trailer has finally dropped. Starring Damon as well as Jodie Comer and Adam Driver, it looks pretty epic. Watch the trailer below:
