1. Dungarvan and Tramore Homesavers stores ordered to close from tonight
Homesavers will close their stores in Dungarvan and Tramore from midnight tonight with the loss of dozens of jobs. The closure comes on foot of a court order taken by Waterford City and County Council for breach of planning permission.
2. Former Debenhams workers disappointed at €3m training package
Former Debenhams workers are shocked and disappointed at a €3 million package for training and upskilling offered by the Government. Former shop steward in Waterford Michelle Gavin told Damien Tiernan on Deise Today that many of the older staff have no need for upskilling.
3. Work begins on Grand Hotel in Tramore
Works have begun on the Grand Hotel in Tramore. The hotel has lain empty and in a state of near dereliction for the past 6 years. Waterford Council had been pursuing the owner, Guoqing Wu, through the courts since a derelict sites notice was issued in 2018.
4. Nearform wins Irish Red Cross Humanitarian Award
The Waterford company behind the Covid-19 tracking app has won an Irish Red Cross Humanitarian Award. Nearform, which is based in Tramore, won the Innovation for Change Award.
5. Extra June bank holidays suggested
Public health expert Dr Gabriel Scally has said that the Irish and UK governments should ask families to postpone Christmas family gatherings to the summer solstice next June. Two extra bank holidays should be offered in June 2021 as an incentive for people to keep their distance from their family over the coming holiday season
6. Laura Whitmore and her husband Iain Sterling expecting first baby
Irish presenter Laura Whitmore has announced that she’s expecting her first baby with her husband Iain Stirling. Taking to Instagram, the Bray native shared a snap of a Guns N’Roses baby grow that says ‘coming 2021’ on it. The two secretly tied the knot last November.
