1. There may be bad news for those hoping to travel home for Christmas
Chief Medical Officer Tony Holohan has told a Government committee travel for non-essential reasons “is not safe” and that returning home for Christmas would not be classed as an essential reason. Dr Holohan said: “The situation at the moment is that international travel of a non-essential nature is not safe. However, the advice for that period could change, as it “relates to a whole lot of factors that are unknowable at this point in time”, Dr Holohan said.
2. Vicky Phelan has confirmed a new tumour amid CervicalCheck Tribunal campaign
CervicalCheck cancer campaigner Vicky Phelan has confirmed her diagnosis with a new tumour as she campaigns for the Government to address issues raised by those impacted by the CervicalCheck Tribunal. Ms Phelan, who received a terminal cervical cancer diagnosis after she was given a false negative smear test result, said her cancer had been stable until she was diagnosed with a new tumour in her lungs in recent weeks.
3. Good news for various sports clubs across Waterford
€67,000 is being shared between 55 clubs around the county as part of an €85 million funding package for the Irish sport sector which has been significantly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.
4. Victory for Irish horse trainer in Melbourne
Joseph O’Brien has trained his second Melbourne Cup champion, with Twilight Payment winning at odds of 25 to 1. Under Jye McNeil, Twilight Payment produced a frontrunning display to win from Tiger Moth – trained by Joseph’s father Aidan – into second.
