1. Cap for affordable housing slammed by opposition

The planned price caps under the government's affordable housing scheme have been slammed by the opposition as unaffordable. A 250,000 Euro cap is set to be introduced in Waterford.

2. Cannabis “gravest threat” to young people’s mental health

In a new report, the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland has warned that cannabis represents the “gravest threat to the mental health of young people in Ireland today”. Hospital admissions of young people with a cannabis-related diagnosis have quadrupled over a 12-year period.

3. Gym owner counts costs after Tallow fire

Personal trainer Tim Lenehan has been counting the cost of a fire which happened at Brideview United’s Leonard Fraser Park on Monday, ripping through the club’s dressing rooms. No injuries were reported however Lenehan lost equipment worth approximately 15 thousand euro. 

4. Waterford woman elected to prestigious US Institution

A Waterford woman has become possibly the first Irish woman ever to be elected to the US National Academy of Sciences. Professor Kate Fitzgerald, who is originally from the Folly in the city, is an internationally renowned immunologist.

5. Republic of Ireland legend Alan McLoughlin dies aged 54

McLoughlin was capped 42 times and is most remembered for the goal he scored against Northern Ireland to seal qualification for the 1994 World Cup. The former Portsmouth and Swindon Town midfielder revealed in March that he was suffering with cancer – which he was first treated for in 2012.

6. Waterford Man doing 200km challenge for Laura Lynn Hospice

Mark McConnell, who runs MC Strength & Conditioning in Dungarvan, is no stranger to taking on strenuous and daring charity challenges. This time, he’s decided to cover 200km around the terrain of Mount Melleray, the Knockmealdown Mountains, and Cappoquin, by cycling, hiking and running.
