1. First vaccines arrive at UHW
The manager of University Hospital Waterford Grace Rothwell confirmed to Damien Tiernan on Deise Today that the first batch of covid vaccine arrived at the hospital this morning and was administered to staff from lunchtime. She also confirmed that there were 5 patients in intensive care with Covid-19. Listen back to the full interview here.
2. State exams must go ahead – ASTI
The president of the Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland (ASTI) has said that State exams must go ahead in 2021 “no matter what”. It comes as the government is said to be considering abandoning the Leaving Certificate. Meanwhile cabinet are said to be considering keeping schools closed until at least January 31st.
3. GAA suspend inter-county training until at least the end of the month
The GAA has confirmed there will be no collective training allowed for inter-county teams for the remainder of January at the very least.
4. Man charged with €131,000 cannabis seizure in Lismore Park
A man in his 20s has been charged in relation to the seizure of €131,000 worth of cannabis in Waterford City. 183 plants were found at a house in Lismore Park on Sunday night after Gardaí carried out the search of a house.
5. Shane Bennett set to return to Déise senior set-up
The Irish Examiner reports that the Ballysaggart man has been in touch with manager Liam Cahill. Shane Bennett stepped away from the panel in late 2019 however the now 24-year-old is expected to link up with his brothers Kieran and Stephen for the upcoming season.
6. Netflix releases viewing figures for Christmas hit Bridgerton
Netflix today released viewing figures for two of their original Christmas releases, period drama Bridgerton (which stars Waterford actor Jamie Beamish) and action movie We Can Be Heroes. Both have been a huge success for the streaming service.
In their first four weeks, it's projected that 63 million households will have courted Shondaland's Bridgerton and 44 million households will have suited up for Robert Rodriguez's We Can Be Heroes, making this our biggest viewing week between Christmas and New Year's ever! pic.twitter.com/dWoLCWn6NO
