1. Warning to young people not to catch Covid on purpose
There has been a call for young people to avoid the trend of catching Covid on purpose in order to obtain a cert for indoor dining and international travel. Dr Denis McCauley says up to one in five young people are developing long-COVID, after recovering from the virus. Meanwhile the vaccine portal for 12 to 15 year olds is likely to open next week after Cabinet approved using the vaccines on those age cohorts.
2. Call for extra Garda presence in Templars Hall
Residents of the Waterford city estate are calling for increased Garda presence. Those living in Templars Hall say there's been a big increase in anti-social behaviour recently.
3. Funding announced for study on coastal erosion ‘waste of money and time’, says Ardmore Cllr
Government funding announced to carry out a study on coastal erosion in Ardmore has been called a waste of taxpayers money by a local councillor. Tom Cronin, says that it is only delaying the process of building a wall to protect the bay from coastal erosion.
4. Waterford’s first menopause clinic opens in Ballybricken
The facility has opened in Ballybricken as part of Fitzpatrick’s Medical Centre. Dr Sinéad Fitzpatrick says it’s becoming less of a taboo subject but she’s finding there’s still some stigma when it comes to discussing menopause.
5. US gymnast Simone Biles pulls out of team event at Tokyo Olympics
The 24 year old dropped out of the women's team final after one vault as the United States lost out on the gold medal to Russia. Biles, widely thought to be the greatest gymnast of all time, said she took the decision to protect her mental health. She wrote on Instagram. "I truly do feel like I have the weight of the world on my shoulders at times."
6. Waterford Minor hurlers face Tipp
