1. Government announce €3.5 billion in Covid supports
Government today announced up to €3.5 billion in additional spending on Covid supports and economic stimulus in a bid to facilitate post-pandemic economic recovery. However, the income and business support schemes that have been availed of by hundreds of thousands of people will be gradually wound down. A reduction in PUP rates is expected to start in September with further staggered reductions in the following months, a decision that has been defended by the Taoiseach in the Dail.
2. Property tax changes will see homes built after 2013 included for charge
Homes built after 2013 will be liable for local property tax under plans approved by Cabinet today. The current tax is based on 2013 valuations, however, homes that were not built at that time are not currently included.
3. Public to have their say on Waterford’s new county development plan
Members of the public are to have their say on the draft development plan for Waterford. The plan which shapes how the city and county will develop between now and 2028 will go on public display for 10 weeks over the summer from the 14th of June. Waterford Council say members of the public will be able to access the draft plan via public counters/ libraries and an online portal.
4. End to school closures for snow days and storms under reform plans
School closures for snow, bad weather and other unexpected reasons could become a thing of the past, the Department of Education has indicated. The Irish Times reports that remote learning and supports could be provided to children in these circumstances using technology similar to that pioneered during the Covid-19 pandemic.
5. Winning €2.4m Lotto ticket sold in Co Cork seaside shop
A shop in Myrtleville, Co Cork sold last Saturday’s €2.4 million winning Lotto ticket. O’Connell’s Foodstore sold the Quick Pick ticket on the day of the draw. The winner is yet to come forward but Lotto bosses have urged people to check their tickets.
