1. Highest number of Covid deaths since start of pandemic
93 people have died due to Covid-19, the highest number since the start of the pandemic. It is expected that in late January or early February, GPs and pharmacists will be able to administer the AstraZeneca vaccine, which can be more easily stored than others requiring ultra-cold storage. Meanwhile a number of hospitals in the south of the country have received and administered a disproportionately large number of Covid-19 vaccines, relative to their size.
2.Taoiseach urged to intervene in row over reopening special needs schools
Following a webinar briefing with public health doctors on Monday, the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation called for a rethink of plans to reopen schools for special needs children this week, saying safety concerns have not been adequately addressed. Labour leader Alan Kelly has now called on Micheál Martin to intervene.
3. Tramore pub did not renew license ahead of December reopening
Ritz owner John Sheedy confirmed to WLR that he did not renew the license when it expired last year on 30th September. Earlier this month Mr Sheedy defended himself against accusations of public health breaches at the pub.
