1. Ten killed in west Belfast in 1971 were ‘entirely innocent’, coroner rules
There was applause at Belfast Coroner’s Court as the findings were delivered following fresh inquests into the 10 deaths in Ballymurphy in August 1971, which included a mother-of-eight and a priest.
2. ‘You have to stand up for your rights’: Waterford Debenhams workers “tired but proud”
Former workers at Debenhams in Waterford city said they are “tired but proud” after an eventful night during which the stock was finally removed from the City Square store, overseen by up to 40 Gardaí. The situation came to a head last night as large trucks moved into the city centre in an operation aided by Gardaí, including the public order unit.
3. ‘This is an attack on rural Ireland’: Fine Gael call out an An Taisce planning appeal
An Taisce’s decision to contest the High Court’s decision to allow Glanbia’s Cheese Plant to be built is ‘an attack on young farmers’ according to Waterford Senator John Cummins. The body is against the building of a 140 million euro Cheese Factory at the Port of Waterford in Belview.
4. Call for reopening of Waterford-Wexford rail line
Waterford Council of Trade Unions (WCTU) is calling on the government to reopen the Waterford-Wexford rail line. Last September marked the 10th anniversary of the closure of the service.
5. Public urged not to buy ducklings amid social media trend
The Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA) is calling on the public not to buy ducklings, following reports that the young birds were being offered for sale on the city streets. It is the result of a Tik Tok trend where users are asked to create a video of a day in the life of a duck.
6. Barrytown rememered 30 years on
Irish actor Colm Meaney is to front a new TV series marking 30 years since the world was introduced to Barrytown. 'The Commitments', 'The Snapper' and 'The Van', all books written by Roddy Doyle, and all films starring Colm Meaney, will be the feature of a new documentary looking back at the success of the books & movies. 'Back to Barrytown' starts on RTE this Sunday night.
