1. Date for return of indoor dining confirmed as July 26th
Speaking to reporters at Government Buildings today, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar said the government is working towards getting regulations in place for Monday 26th July. It is hoped that restaurants and pubs can open their doors for indoor dining for fully vaccinated people and those that are immune having had the virus six months previous. Meanwhile Dr Tony Holohan said the “responsible” public health advice was that it was safer for unvaccinated children to avoid indoor activities such as dining.
2. Just under 1,000 COVID cases announced as Delta variant spreads
Earlier today the head of the HSE Paul Reid predicted that there would be around 1,000 new cases announced today and that the numbers are only going to go up from here. This evening it was announced that there were 994 new cases of Covid across the country. It's believed there has been an increase in travel-related cases from holiday destinations such as Spain, Portugal and the UK.
3. Study to extend Waterford Greenway into Mallow approved
A feasibility study to extend the Waterford Greenway into Mallow via Fermoy has been approved by Waterford City & County Council. A section 85 agreement was made by councillors to enter into a partnership with Cork County Council, who will take the lead role in assessing the viability of the project. It is believed that the study may take up to two years to complete.
4. Locals in Rathgormack buy their local
A 19-strong group from Rathgormack, near Carrick-on-Suir, have bought the establishment formerly known as Maudie’s and are opening it at the end of the month as part-pub, part-coffee shop. They decided to join each other after the pub went up for sale as its closure would have left the village, located right at the foot of the Comeraghs, without a watering hole.
5. Tramore’s August festival of racing will not be open to the public this year
The August festival of racing at Tramore will not be open to the general public this year. The decision to limit attendance to 500 was taken in accordance with government guidelines. The General Manager of Tramore racecourse Owen Byrne says they are very disappointed.
6. Elton John announces Cork show as part of final farewell tour
Elton John has announced that the final time he performs on tour in Ireland will be in Cork’s Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Friday, July 1st . The singer-songwriter announced the Cork show as part of his final farewell tour ‘Elton John Farewell Yellow Brick Road: The Final Tour’. Tickets for the Cork show will go on sale next Thursday, July 22nd at 9am, from all usual Ticketmaster outlets.
