1. Progress made in Brexit talks
The British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen have been speaking by phone this afternoon. It comes as Wednesday has been set as a deadline by the EU to reach a Brexit deal. Talks will resume tomorrow which has been welcomed by Taoiseach Micheal Martin.
I welcome the fact that negotiators will resume their discussions on an EU and UK trade deal in Brussels tomorrow. An agreement is in everyone's best interests. Every effort should be made to reach a deal.

2. Dead dog abandoned in Portlaw
A Waterford Councillor says he was shocked to hear a dead dog was dumped near Portlaw over the weekend. It appears to have been left by the bottle bank at the GAA pitch sometime between Saturday evening and Sunday morning.
3. Wealthy students retain grip on college places and degrees
The ‘postcode lottery’ around who goes to college, and who gets elite degree courses, is once again shown up in a new Higher Education Report into the socio-economic profile of Irish students in universities and Institutes of Technology. 4. Republic of Ireland draw in World Cup qualifiers
The draw for the World Cup in Qatar in 2022 took place within the last hour and Stephen Kenny's Republic of Ireland side have been drawn against Portugal, Serbia, Luxembourg and Azerbaijan.

5. Waterford rises to the Bus Éireann Christmas challenge
Bus Eireann has thanked the people of Waterford for their contributions for the vulnerable, elderly and those living in food poverty this Christmas. More than a thousand non-perishable goods and household items were donated on Thursday. They successfully filled a bus for Waterford Food Bank.
