1. Outdoor plan to go ahead despite large crowds over the weekend
As people from around the county and further beyond flocked to Waterford’s scenic spots in the good weather on Sunday, local representatives have expressed concern at the huge volume of crowds in some areas. However the re-opening of outdoor dining from next Monday is due to go ahead.
2. 40 to 44 year-olds can register for Covid vaccine from Wednesday
44-year-olds can register on Wednesday, June 2nd and the portal will open to those a year younger on each subsequent day. The HSE’s Chief Clinical Officer Dr Colm Henry expects the majority of that age group will be vaccinated by the end of June or into July.
3. A mother, father, grandmother, aunts and uncles accused of abusing three children
The trial of three men and four women accused of sexually abusing three children in Munster has opened before a jury. The seven accused, who cannot be named for legal reasons, include the parents, grandmother and several aunts and uncles of the three main child complainants. The accused range in ages from 27 to 57 and live in various locations in Munster.
4. Urgent support is ‘vital’ to post office network survival
The Waterford-based President of the Irish Postmasters Union has said post offices are a critical piece of State infrastructure and vitally important to the survival of local communities. Sean Martin, who is a postmaster in Tramore, says the post office network represent “value for money” for the Government and should be given extra services to ensure their survival.
5. Kilmacthomas Fire Service attend car fire near Mahon Bridge
Emergency services attended a car fire between Mahon Bridge and Kilclooney Woods, County Waterford this afternoon. Fire services were notified at approximately 1.45pm this afternoon and one unit from Kilmacthomas attended the incident on the R676. The occupants of the car had exited the vehicle and there were no injuries.
6. Rose of Tralee officially cancelled again
The Rose of Tralee Festival has been cancelled for the second year in a row due to Covid-19. Festival CEO Anthony O'Gara said: “Sadly, the timeframe envisaged to safely steer our communities out of this pandemic, and our responsibility to positively support those efforts, mean that we will not be able to have a Festival again this year, which is immensely disappointing for all of us involved."
