The Big 6
Every evening at 6 o’clock, WLR brings you the 6 of Waterford’s biggest stories of the day.
1. Listen Back: Déise Today special - Is Waterford on the right track?
Has Waterford got a fair deal in the past development-wise? Are we on the right track now and indeed, how positive is our future here?
Déise Today dedicated its programme this morning to discussing the wider issues about Waterford – and its place within the South East region – with a host of contributors from the worlds of business, innovation, politics and more, to get a sense of how people feel about Waterford in 2021.
2. Road map for return of international travel due from Government next week
A road map for the return of international travel could be ready next week, Minister for Tourism Catherine Martin has said.
It comes as Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly said the State is hoping to sign up to the EU’s Digital Green Certificate “as soon as possible”.
The issue is to be discussed at Cabinet next week and Ms Martin said a clear plan will be crucial for the recovery of Ireland’s tourism sector.
3. Concern over parking at proposed Ferrybank development
Waterford metropolitan area councillors are concerned about the impact on businesses in Ferrybank, if parking plans for apartments at the former Flynn’s pub go ahead in their current form.
Designs for 14 social housing units at Fountain Street, Ferrybank were presented by Waterford Council at this week’s meeting of city representatives.
4. Harry Maguire expected to miss Europa League final
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer expects Manchester United captain Harry Maguire to miss the Europa League final against Villarreal.
An integral part of the set-up since his big-money move from Leicester in 2019, the 28-year-old was forced off in the comeback win at Aston Villa on May 9th after Anwar El Ghazi awkwardly landed on him.
Maguire suffered ankle ligament damage in the incident but Solskjaer had been upbeat about the Red Devils skipper returning to lead the side out in Wednesday’s final in Gdansk.
5. Camphire International Horse Trials & Country Fair postponed until July 2022
The dates for the SemaLease Camphire International Horse Trials and Country Fair 2022 have been announced as it’s confirmed this year’s event is cancelled.
The popular event will run over the Bank Holiday weekend Thursday 28 to Sunday 31 July 2022.
Organisers say they are hugely disappointed to have to cancel this year but “the uncertainties due to the Covid-19 pandemic over the last few months have made it impossible to deliver this much-loved international event”.
