There are concerns about University Hospital Waterford’s ability to cope if there’s a Covid spike following this weekend’s All-Ireland final as crowds of people are expected to gather to watch Sunday’s final between Waterford and Limerick. Meanwhile, people are being urged to consider restricting their movements from today if they plan on seeing vulnerable family or friends over Christmas.

Two primary schools in counties Mayo and Laois have closed early for the Christmas holidays due to concerns about Covid-19 outbreaks in the community. Holy Family Senior School in Portlaoise & Claremorris Boys National School in Co Mayo will close from Friday.

A driver has been caught travelling at 137km/h on the N7 today as part of operation ‘National Slow Down Day’ which began at 7am this morning and will run until 7am on Saturday.

Shooting stars will soar to their peak yearly activity over Ireland this weekend, according to Astronomy Ireland. Up to 20 times more shooting stars will cross the sky than normal as the Geminid meteor shower reaches its peak.

Dame Barbara Windsor’s died at the age of 83. The actress – who had Alzheimer’s – passed away last night with her husband by her side.
