Health experts have warned about the risk of Austrailian Flu this Winter with cases reported around the country and forecasts of widespread cases to come, similar to those of Swine Flu in 2009.

This strain originating in Austrailia, similar to the regular flu, effects vunerable groups such as the elderly and young children the worst.

There are two types of strains. The A virus predominantly affects older people, while the B virus mainly affects younger people. The flu vaccine covers the A virus, but it doesn’t totally cover the B virus so it is recommended to take extra care among young children.

Speaking on Déise Today, Dr. Geoff Plant outlined the symptoms and how to recover if you are unfortunate enough to be affected by it.

He said that symptoms, which include a high temperature, muscular and joint pain, and vomiting and diarrhea, are sudden and often last for up to seven days.

If you do become ill it is recommended to regularly take paracetemol and fluids to stay hydrated and plenty of rest.
