On WLR we are discussing the issue of overly heavy schoolbags. We have had numerous texts and messages from parents who feel this is an issue.

One parent said that their child, who is a first year student, had to take out two dictionaries and had no lunch box or drink in bag and it’s still just over 20 kg/3 stone 2lb. The parents rang the school twice about this and got no result. The boy already has back pain over it.

On Deise Today Damien spoke to Chris, a parent who is concerned and angry about this issue. He also discussed this issue with Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan, Bishop of Waterford and Lismore, as well as with John Dineen from Dynamic Chiropdy who says he believes this issue will have a long term impact on children.

And finally Dr Anthony Staines, professor of health systems at Dublin City University, gave his take on the issue.
