Speaking on Déise Today the former president of the Primary Principals Network, Maria Doyle, has advised parents to allow their children to stay at home in an effort to avoid the spread of the flu in Waterford schools.
She highlighted the stess on students when dealing with sickness in schools and how it effects their ability to learn.
Maria reminded listeners off the lessons learned from the swine flu scare in 2011 during which schools implemented strict policies regarding the use of hand sanitiser and the reduction of the risk of contamination in the event of a pupil falling ill.
She also spoke about the risk to teachers given the shortage of substitutes currently being experienced by most schools in the county. She warned that teachers might feel obligated to go into work when they are sick despite the health risks posed by these strains of flu.
If you or a family member is experiencing symptoms of the flu it is recommended to regularly paracetemol, to stay hydrated and to rest until symptoms subside.
