A specialist in Public Health Medicine in the Department of Public Health in HSE South has given her view that testing for alcohol while pregnant will enable women to understand the serious message of how alcohol can affect a pregnancy.
Dr Mary T O'Mahony believes that testing will help prevent Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders.
Speaking to Eamon, Dr Mary T O'Mahony said; " What studies have found is that our countries prevalence of Foetal Alcohol Syndrome and Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is directly related to the population's intake of alcohol expressed in litres per head per annum."
