On Friday's version of 'Déise Today', the Déise team invited well known Waterford playwright Jim Nolan into the studio to garner some publicity for his new play which he is currently fundraising for 'The Red Iron' which will be staged at Garter Lane Theatre in November and which he is fundraising for. At the time of writing, the fund is at over 5,000 euro.
They are hoping for over 7,500 euro in funding to accommodate the costs of the play.
Jim was joined in studio by Damien along with former Waterford City councillor Mary Roche who was doing PR for Jim and helping to raise awareness for the play. On the phone also was Padraig O'Griofa, co-producer of the play.
Unknown to Jim though was that Jim was going to be in studio for a full hour and was surprised by several guests who came and went during the show.
Secondly, Jim was joined by Sean Crowe, his ex English teacher at Mount Sion, where Jim went to school.
Sean was a massive inspiration to Jim and always encouraged him to write.
Jim and Damien were then joined by some of Jim's friends in the drama business such as TV Honan, Director of Waterford Spraoi, Caroline Senior, former artistic director of Garter Lane and joined on the phone by Peter Fallon, who had published Jim's previous plays.
Then, Jim's mam, Alice went into the studio and an interview from the day before, where Damien had gone out to Alice's house to say a few words about Jim was played out on air.
Then, Jim's brother John Nolan joined the conversation over the phone along with Jim's daughter, Megan Nolan who joined them from Athens, Greece to talk about her father and how for Megan, Jim's writing had been an inspiration for her and made her want to become a writer herself, although as she says "never a playwright".
