On Thursday's Déise Today, Damien was talking to Bernadette Ryan, relationship counsellor and also listener Roisin Ryan. The three were having a chat about is it okay in today's age to still take your husband's surname or is it too old fashioned?
Roisin did decide to take to get her surname changed and described the massive deal that it was for her and how it still is a big deal for her! "That was my name for 33 years, it was a sense of pride for me, and I completely lost it now, they know my entire family but yet my name is now Ryan, and it's totally different for me".
She recounts the conversation that she had with her husband about it and how "my husband couldn't understand it, maybe it was almost a sense of rejection for him which it totally wasn't, it was just something I couldn't get used to it".
Bernadette entails about how in today's world it's now a much bigger deal for women compared to before, Bernadette says that before it was just normal for women to do it, "women were seen as property and so didn't really have any input into the discussion".
