On Tuesday's Déise Today, Damien sat down with Chris Mulhall, Lecturer in Modern Languages at WIT.

Chris was in the studio to talk about the new entries into the 'Oxford English Dictionary' in recent weeks. Some of the words that have been included are 'Jibbons', 'Chuddies' and 'Sitooterie'.

Chris explained to us that a lot of new words that are included in the 'Oxford English Dictionary' are slang words, but they are also words that most of us in our daily lives would not be using.

The conversation then delved into some of the Irish slang that is in the dictionary. For example, the word 'Gobshite' is in the dictionary and it comes from American seamen and explains in a derogatory term for bad seamen.

Chris also explained about some Waterford terms such as "lack". He told us that he is a Kildare man and that he had never really heard of that term until he had moved to Waterford little over 30 years ago. He says that some people in other counties might even be slightly offended by the term such is the nature of it. He explains that it might be of French origin as especially in Waterford. Waterford had quite a strong French/Norman connection, and that might have caused for a lot of our slang to have the rolling of the R's just like the French.

Tuesday's Déise Today also had plenty of other discussions as well!
