On Friday's version of 'Déise Today', Damien was speaking to Conor McCarthy, one of the investors for the new runway that gained capital planning permission from the government this week for Waterford Airport, spoke with Damien this morning.

Conor is the chairman of 'Stobart', a co-founder of 'Air Asia' and founder of 'Dublin Aerospace'.

This was after news on Friday morning that ministers within government had warned Minister for Transport Shane Ross that it is unwise to invest 5 million into the runway.

Minister of State for Training and Skills John Halligan has said the €5m investment from the Government in Waterford Airport was "a small amount".

This follows reports that Minister for Transport Shane Ross went against the advice of officials in granting the investment, Mr Halligan said that down the years, such advice from civil servants has not been correct.

The Waterford TD said the southeast should have the same infrastructural opportunities as everywhere else in Ireland and asked why the region should be excluded when every other region across Ireland has an airport.

He said the airport "was viable and hundreds of thousands of people were flying from there when you were able to land prop planes down through the years".

Mr Halligan indicated it would be a case of "build it and they will come", adding that the business would be there once you have the jets.

He said Taoiseach Leo Varadkar supported the decision and came to Waterford to meet businesses about the move.
