A Waterford woman affected by the vaginal mesh scandal has that said since she has had the procedure done in 2010 it has "destroyed" her life.
Speaking to Maria McCann on 'Deise Today', Ferrybank native Terri Martin said the implantation of the mesh device - which she had carried out to treat mild urinary incontinence - had affected her severely physically, emotionally and socially.
The woven sheet is used as a treatment for stress urinary incontinence or prolapse. The fabric acts as a sling or hammock to support the bladder in place.
Unfortunately now Terri is one of the thousands of woman claiming to be experiencing life-changing symptoms as a result of the implant eroding through the vaginal tissue.
As a result of the this, the National Health Service NHS in the United Kingdom has stopped procedures involving vaginal mesh implants.
"I have intermittent bleeding, there is a lot of pain involved but some people are wheelchair-bound," Terri told Maria McCann.
"It scars the vagina, there is discomfort during intimacy which causes more problems, constant infections, bleeding urinary problems, organ perforation and neuromuscular issues. All these symptoms come from this and now they are linking it to autoimmune diseases as well," explained Terri.
