A terminally ill mother who was given incorrect test results  with cervical cancer has settled her High Court action against a US laboratory for €2.5m.

Vicky Phelan (43) was diagnosed with cancer three years after her smear test results of 2011 were incorrectly reported as clear of abnormalities.

By the time she had another smear test in 2014 she had cervical cancer and in January this year she was given six to 12 months to live.

The mother from Mooncoin broke down outside the High Court after her hearing and said" "There are no winners here. I am terminally ill and there is no cure for my cancer."

Speaking on Déise Today her solicitor Cian O'Carroll has called from an independent review of cervical.

" There needs to be an independent external review of CervicalCheck to see what went on two levels;

First of all what are they doing in terms of the standards of reading of slides and the second thing is why and how could it come about that they would decide not to inform doctors of these mistakes and then not inform patiences."
