1. 40 people died from Covid-19 at UHW in one week

Matt Shanahan told the Dáil that additional morgue capacity had to be called upon. The Independent Deputy said UHW “has the lowest budget of all the model four hospitals in the country.” Meanwhile Ireland is rapidly redrafting its plan for rolling out vaccines to older people after it was advised to favour the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines for those aged 70 and above.

2. HQ for the new TU of the South East “absolutely” should be located in Waterford

Carlow/Kilkenny TD and former Minister of State John Paul Phelan told Deise Today this morning that in his view, someone was playing “silly beggars” on the issue and he maintained that political representatives in this region all want the headquarters to be here.

4. Irish teenager who racially abused Ian Wright avoids criminal conviction

A Tralee teenager, now a third level student, who sent “ crass and racist messages” to former footballer Ian Wright after his “character” failed to perform to expectations in a virtual soccer match has been given the benefit of the Probation Act and avoided a criminal conviction. The footballer has responded saying he is disappointed.

5. Adam King’s Hug Cards on sale this Friday

He stole the nation’s hearts when he appeared on The Late Late Toy Show last year and now six-year-old Adam King from Co Cork is spreading more joy with his ‘Hug For You’ card. The cards will be on sale at SuperValu and selected Centra stores from Friday, February 5th.
