Waterford TD David Cullinane has defended his use of the phrase ‘Up the Ra’ in a victory speech to supporters on Sunday night.
The Sinn Féin deputy retained his seat in the election, topping the poll in Waterford with over 20,000 votes.
A video has emerged of him shouting ‘Up the Ra’ and ‘Tiochfaidh ár Lá’ at a celebration event in a Waterford City pub.
In this interview with Damien Tiernan on Deise Today he told him it was a "throwaway comment" to supporters and "most reasonable" people see it in that way. The SF deputy admitted it would have been better if he had not said it, he was sorry for offending people and hoped "we can move on now".
