Five Covid-19 patients in intensive care at University Hospital Waterford

The number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 at University Hospital Waterford remains high.

According to the General Manager of University Hospital Waterford, Grace Rothwell, there are 25 patients with the virus in the hospital this morning (Tuesday).

Speaking to Damien Tiernan on Deise Today, she also said there are five patients in intensive care with 15 others currently awaiting swab results for the virus.

At around 9am today, the first batch of covid vaccine arrived at UHW and Grace Rothwell said it was hoped to administer these initial 957 doses to staff from lunchtime today.

She described it as great news for the hospital which she reiterated was coping well, in the circumstances, with the growing number of covid patients on site.

In total, there were 770 patients with the virus in hospitals across the country at 8 pm last night. It had increased to 817 by 8 am this morning. That's a 97% rise on last Tuesday's total.

The highest number of patients in hospital with the virus was 881 in April.
