The deaths of two men in their forties in the McGwire House Men's Hostel on Bath Street in the city has been described as "very sad and tragic news".
Speaking on the Deise Today show this morning, David O'Neill, Regional Administrator of the Society of the St Vincent de Paul, said thoughts and prayers are with the families of the two men as well as their friends.
The men, who have not yet been named, were residents of the hostel which is currently run by the St Vincent de Paul.
Gardai made the grim discovery when called to the hostel at around 4.45pm on Thursday.
One man was found unresponsive and declared dead at the scene.
While dealing with the first incident, gardaí then found the second man dead in his bed
Investigations are continuing and gardai say post-mortems will determine the course of their investigations. There is no indication of anything suspicious at this time.
Last night, another resident of the hostel, Darryl, spoke to Damien Tiernan at the scene, and said the two men were "good people" whom he had known very well. The hostel currently has 25-30 residents and Darryl said they all know each other and have their meals together.
Social justice activist Fr Peter McVerry also spoke on the programme about the homeless crisis generally and how devastating any deaths in hostel facilities can be for fellow residents and indeed staff, as they all form a bond.
