An ambitious new community boathouse project is planned for the River Suir.
The Waterford Dragon Warriors and the Deise Boat club are among those joining forces to set up an access point to the River at Bilberry with storage for non-motorised craft.
The project is expected to cost in the region of 750 thousand euro and a gofundme campaign has been launched.
The group says their intention is to establish a facility to provide an opportunity for people to gain access to the river in a safe and supervised way that will accommodate all levels of capability and commitment across a range of river-based activities.

This effort is being driven by the obvious shortage of river access in the City and the large numbers of interested people involved in various sports who have difficulty in participating locally, resulting in them becoming involved in clubs and societies outside of the immediate area.
A two-acre site at Billberry has been acquired with access to the Waterford Greenway. Over time, the plan is for this to be developed into a riverside campus to accommodate a variety of clubs and activities.
