A feasibility study to extend the Waterford Greenway into Mallow via Fermoy has been approved by Waterford City & County Council.
A section 85 agreement was made by councillors to enter into a partnership with Cork County Council, who will take the lead role in assessing the viability of the project.
It is believed that the study may take up to two years to complete.
Both Cork and Waterford County Councils were each awarded €80,000 to undertake the study, which is ‘to examine the feasibility for the development of a potential Mallow-to-Dungarvan Greenway that would link in and connect with the existing Waterford Greenway’.
The feasibility study process will involve the formal appointments of consultants, who will act as a direct point of contact on overall management of the project.
News of the potential extension was warmly welcomed by local councillors.
Labour Party Councillor John Pratt expressed his delight at the news, stating his hopes that the study would give a green light to the extension.
Fianna Fail Councillor James Tobin also welcomed the news, but warned that the study 'mustn't go on for too long' as it could cause discontent among locals.
He said the Waterford Greenway is the 'best in Ireland' and would love to see it extended further.
