The discovery of two dead baby swans is more than likely not connected to the quality of the water at the lake in Tramore.
That’s according to Councillor Jim Griffin who visited a pond known locally as ‘the lake’ in the town on Saturday, where the cygnets were discovered.
A large male swan has carried out a number of serious attacks on his counterparts in recent months.
Cllr Griffin says they now believe that the dead cygnets were sadly victims of the latest attack.
"This male swan that's there now would seem to be exceptionally aggressive, he was flying for me straight away when I went towards where he seems to float. I don't think it's to do with the quality of the water in the lake. I'm pretty certain that's what happened to them."
It's not the first time the swan has struck, according to Cllr Griffin. He said recently a female swan had to be removed from the lake due to attacks:
"In the last couple of weeks, there was a female swan who had hardier cygnets on the lake, but she was a flightless swan from an old injury, and she was a target of the male swan on numerous occasions. I was delighted when I heard they removed her to a safe haven and she's enjoying life now on a pet farm on the copper coast and has a beautiful pond to keep her safe."
