The Mayor of Waterford says he's extremely upset to learn that Pride flags on The Mall in Waterford City were burned overnight.
The flags were raised on Friday for Pride Month, to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community in the county.
Mayor Damien Geoghegan says he was really disappointed to learn of the news this morning.
"The flags on The Mall in Waterford were taken down overnight and actually burned.
"I'm so disappointed that someone went out of their way to destroy them in such a public fashion," Cllr Geoghegan said.
Waterford Gardaí have launched an investigation into the incident and the Mayor of Waterford said he will ensure the flags will fly again this month.
"Gardaí in Waterford are investigating it right now I believe they have CCTV images of it.
"Members of the Gardaí were actually present for the flags being flown last Friday and have lent their full support to the initiative of the Pride flag.
"I won't be deterred as Mayor and it is certainly my intention those flags and to ensure that those flags will fly on The Mall in Waterford for the month of June," Geoghegan said.
