A WATERFORD security expert says the cyber attack on the HSE is a warning to all businesses to ensure their IT systems are properly secure.
John Gleeson, Director of Waterford-based 'Radius Technologies', says their own phones have been "hopping" since news emerged of the ransomware attack last week, shutting down HSE systems countrywide.
"It is so important for companies to ensure they have robust systems in place," John Gleeson told Deise Today.
"Carry out cyber reviews on systems and most important is disaster recovery. Have a plan in place and tested and make sure your IT sytems are locked down, patched and managed securely," he said, also suggesting business should look at getting their companies cyber certified.
The HSE has warned that it expects the criminals behind the cyber attack on its IT systems to begin releasing data on the dark web from today.
The hackers are believed to be a Russian organised crime group and have been holding onto sensitive information for more than 10 days now.
The disruption has resulted in thousands of appointments being cancelled.
Chief Executive of the HSE Paul Reid yesterday said that good progress was being made to restore some of the national systems.
People are also being advised to alert the gardaí if contacted about their personal information.
John Gleeson told Damien Tiernan today that with remote working so prominent at the moment, it was important for every company to be diligent about their IT and know who is driving their stratgegy.
He also said that companies needed to be diligent too about employees that leave the workplace, to ensure that they are locked out of systems and cannot continue to access data.
