Wexford councillor expresses concern for South East over possible delays in Waterford's North Quays development

A local TD says he hopes Falcon Real Estate will still be the main developers of the North Quays - but there are others interested if that falls through.

Matt Shanahan says we'll find out next week if Falcon have managed to meet the contract's preconditions.

The development is also massively important for Waterford's neighbouring counties - including Wexford.

New Ross Councillor Michael Sheehan told Déise Today that their county plan depends on the success of the region as a whole:

"Over 2,500 cars go backwards and forwards between Waterford and New Ross every day commuting, so it's vital from our point of view that we have a strong Waterford and a vibrant region.

"Our county development plan, that we're currently in the throws of at the moment, has that built into it - that we have to understand and recognise that New Ross and South West Wexford is in the metropolitan area plan of Waterford.

"It's vital that that plan succeeds and for that to succeed North Quays has to go ahead and has to succeed."

Continuing, Councillor Sheehan said that he now has concerns about his county's plan, because much of it is contingent on the success of the rest of the region:

"We are making plans based on the assumption that Waterford will proceed as planned and all our numbers are based on either a 'best case' scenario or a 'some case' scenario.

"So it's just a concerning point for me. You know, I'm watching this from a distance and like, I am optomistic that the development will happen, but the difficulty I have is that if Waterford is not performing, if the South East is not performing, then New Ross won't be able to perform to our optimum."

The deadline for Falcon Real Estate to meet the preconditions of the contract is tomorrow, Saturday May 15th.
