Waterford horse trainer Henry de Bromhead is to be bestowed with the freedom of Waterford City and County.

The honour comes after the Knockeen man's tremendous successes at Cheltenham and Aintree this year.

His achievements are unparalleled, with wins at Cheltenham in the three most prestigious races: he won the Champion Hurdle with Honeysuckle; the Queen Mother’s Champion Chase with Put The Kettle On; and his horses Minella Indo and A Plus Tard took first and second in the Gold Cup.

Shortly afterwards at Aintree, Minella Times won the Grand national, with Rachael Blackmore onboard ensuring another historic association for the yard, when she became the first female jockey to win the race.

The motion was put forward the Mayor of Waterford Damien Geoghegan at the monthly meeting of councillors yesterday (Thursday).

There was enthusiastic support for it with many councillors recounting his historic achievements:

Mr Geoghegan said the 49 year-old had “set new standards” and said he had brought “great honour and glory to Waterford”.

Cllr Joe Kelly said his achievements are "truly historic" and would never be achieved again by anyone "unless he does the same again next year!"

Many councillors paid glowing tributes referencing his great pride in Waterford.

Henry will join the likes of Brendan Bowyer, John Treacy and Sean Kelly when he receives the honour at a time and date to be arranged.

It was also agreed that Rachael Blackmore be invited to attend.
