The FAI’s Referee Department have added additional online Referee Beginner Courses for those interested in taking their first steps in becoming a referee, after the opening courses sold out earlier this week.

Previously, the courses took place in-person, but the Referee Department have created an online version to allow easy access to everyone from the comfort of their own homes. On-field practical sessions will return, once Covid-19 restrictions allow them to.

The course is split into three sections, the first section will allow participants to learn about the Laws of the Game in their own time, in the next section participants will attend three online classes. Each class will last for two-hours and will cover the more complex Laws of the Game. An online examination will conclude the final section of the course.

FAI Head of Grassroots Ger McDermott said: “Referees are vital to the game so it is fantastic to see this incredible response to our online course. To fill all three courses so quickly is really encouraging at a time when everyone is so excited by the imminent return of competitive football from June 7. I wish all our course attendees the very best of luck and I want to thank our Referee’s Department and the instructors for facilitating these extra courses to meet the demand. Good luck to all involved.”
