'It's a guessing game now': Waterford woman who received AstraZeneca jab

A Waterford woman who is in her forties and received her first AstraZeneca vaccine last week said its clearly a "guessing game" as to what happens now in terms of a possible second dose.

Lisa Ryan is considered 'high risk' for Covid-19 because she has type 1 diabetes and on Thursday last, she received her first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine at WIT Arena.

Yesterday, however, the National Immunisation Advisory Committee decided that - due to possible linking of very rare and unusual blood clots in people who received this jab - it will no longer be offered to under 60s.

Lisa Ryan told Damien Tiernan on 'Deise Today' this morning that this development did concern her.

"I feel it's like a guessing game now. I would be worried about blood clots. There were thousands due to be vaccinated today and now it's not happening so this is being taken seriously," she said.

Lisa said that for herself, and many more like her, it would be a case now of waiting to see what happens now.

She described how she was quite sick last weekend after receiving her first first vaccine dose.

"I'm going to try not to worry or dwell it on it too much. I'm sure we'll know more in the next few weeks. We've never been in this situation before, it's a learning curve."

Prof Kingston Mills, Prof of Immunology at Trinity College Dublin, said the NIAC had to put safety first even though the numbers of cases of reported clots were very, very low.

He said that although clotting events happen a lot generally, clots in brains are more insidious and can be fatal.

He said the NIAC also would have taken into consideration that there were other vaccines available also as a fallback when making this decision re: the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine.
