Family "devastated" at alleged treatment of elderly parents battling Covid-19

A WATERFORD woman whose elderly parents are battling Covid-19 in their Kilmacow home said she feels the HSE and UHW have put her parents in a "dangerous" situation.

Ann Marie McCarthy says her family are "devastated" that both her parents have now tested positive for the virus - and are barely able to cope alone, at home.

Oliver Renehan (74) is believed to have contracted Covid-19 in UHW after injuring his hip in a fall on ice on January 3.

He stayed in the orthopaedic ward which had a confirmed Covid outbreak on January 8.

Just as Oliver was being discharged from the hospital on January 13, he was called back and told he had tested positive for Covid-19.

However, because he wasn't very ill from it, Oliver was sent home -  to his elderly wife - in an ambulance regardless.

Oliver is the main carer for Maura, who has Parkinson's Disease, and other health issues.

To the devastation of their family, Maura has now also tested positive for Covid-19  and because the family can't visit them, the elderly couple have to rely on neighbours and others to drop off food for them.

Oliver is also recovering from the surgery he had for his hip injury but is still having to help feed Maura and look after her during the night.

On Deise Today this morning, Damien spoke to Ann Marie, the couple's daughter, who has described how upset the family feel that her Dad was sent home to his vulnerable wife while carrying the virus....

Meanwhile, Oliver and Maura also had a quick word with Damien themselves this morning about their dire situation...
