Plans for Dungarvan skatepark get the green light

Young people in Dungarvan will soon be able to make use of a new skatepark in the town.

Waterford Council has confirmed that the project is set to go out to tender for the design and build.

The amenity will be located off John Treacy Street near Aldi and will be funded through the local authority, sports partnership, and local Lions Club.

Speaking at this week's Dungarvan Lismore Council Meeting, Damien Geoghegan says it was the last act of Dungarvan Town Council.

"I think that the decision that we made when we were disposing of a portion of the land at the other end to Aldi... the proposal I made at the time was that we would ringfence that funding for the skateboard park so it made it a lot easier to put the funding in place." Cllr Geoghegan said.

The news was welcomed by a number of local councillors including Fianna Fail's Tom Cronin.

"I think it's going to be of serious benefit to the youth of Dungarvan and the surrounding areas. It has the potential to be an attraction for day-trippers to visit the park" Cllr Cronin said.

Labour's Thomas Phelan says it's something that young people can look forward to.

"Whenever anything positive like this comes about I think it's very important to give credit where it is due. I want to commend everyone for their involvement and I look forward to seeing this come to fruition."

"It will be something for generations to come, it will be putting Dungarvan on the map as a place for young people. It's something they can really look forward to and something we can say we're delivering for them."
