A lot of things happen in the space of 61 years.
The Vietnam War started and finished. JFK was assassinated. The Good Friday Agreement was signed. The Cuban Missile Crisis played out. Man walked on the moon. The Chernobyl disaster rocked Eastern Europe. Colour television arrived on the scene. Ireland won the Eurovision six times. Jack Charlton lead the Republic of Ireland to two world cups and a European Championship. Ireland joined the EEC and then the EU. Five people were killed in the Miami Showband Massacre. A man in colossal debt told the nation that “As a community, we are living way beyond our means.” Bobby Sands died after 66 days on hunger strike. Shergar went missing. Sinead O Connor ripped up a picture of the pope. Riverdance becomes a thing.
In all that time, Waterford are still waiting for an All-Ireland win.
This Sunday, in a year that will go down in history for all the wrong reasons, the Deise have the chance to make a mark in the history books. For the first time since 1959, Waterford could lift the Liam McCarthy cup. Waterford have been in the showpiece game three times since Frankie Walsh climbed the steps of the Hogan Stand to be greeted by Eamonn De Valera and was presented with the Liam McCarthy Cup.
Three times - falling short on each attempt.
Before the ball is thrown in and the game gets underway, listen back to the story so far, to some of the voices who've lifted Liam McCarthy, to some who fell short and to those who've been there to follow the action every step of the way.
