A Waterford city and county councillor has said a situation whereby up to a dozen horses are regularly grazing in Kilbarry cemetery is "greatly distressing".

Jason Murphy of FF says this has become an ongoing issue in the cemetery, located off the Ballybeg Link Road, in recent times.

He also said he believes the horses involved are coming from the halting site close to the facility and are being left there to graze.

Speaking to Damien Tiernan on Deise Today, Cllr Murphy said the situation - captured recently in some photos circulated online - was causing "great distress" to family members of people buried in the cemetery.

The councillor, based in the nearby Larchville area, also said that up to 30 horses have been seized by the council from the Traveller community in Waterford this year already.

"Everyone, no matter what community you're from, or what colour, religion or ethnic group, should be equal before the law. That is the foundation that a society should be built upon," the councillor said.
