Do you remember heading to Kilmeaden for the Freewheelers M.C. Custom Classic Bike Show, or seeing The Smiths in The Savoy?

You might even have experienced the Scooter rallies in Tramore or were YOU there when U2 played in The Showboat??

Or maybe you danced your socks off in The Roxy or Metroland.

If any of these triggers a memory for you then tune into WLR on Friday 30th & Saturday 31st October from 7pm to hear the 5-part documentary Against The Current, where we take a look at the counter culture movement of Waterford from 1979 – 1996. The programme is produced by Ray Colclough and Keith Daniels.

Listen to some of the key figures in Waterfords Counter Culture movements when we explore why these Sub Cultures wanted to be different from main stream while doing it in a time of huge socially and political turmoil in the Island of Ireland.

The documentary is over 5 episodes with an introduction to all the subcultures that graced the streets of Waterford , then we go to a 4 part series with episode 1 the history of “The Freewheelers MC” episode 2 we cover the Mod, Ska and Scooterist scenes, onto episode 3 covers the Punk, New Wave and Indie scenes and finally episode 4 covers the Dance Scene from the 90’s with such clubs as as Tasty and Can’t Stop.

We must thank everyone who has contributed to this project, without you this would not have been possible!
