Have you ever had a knee operation or will you need a knee replacement someday?

And would you like if it was a combination of skilled surgeons and robotics?

Today (Wednesday), for the first time in the country in a public hospital, a new era of robotics is being used in knee operations.

A team of medics from Waterford are involved in carrying out the first robotic knee replacement in Ireland for public patients.

The procedure involves a highly advanced computer that calculates real-time information about the patient and it is taking place a Kilcreene Orthopaedic Hospital in Kilkenny.

Consultant Orthopedic Trauma Surgeon (and specialist in hip and knee surgery) Fiachra Rowan spoke to Damien Tiernan on Deise Today this morning.

He is involved in the procedure today and said prior to this, only one private hospital in Cork had used robotics in such a procedure.

You can listen back to Fiachra's interview with Damien below and also watch a video of the interview.
