There's concern among residents in Gaeltacht na nDéise about plans to build a large housing development in the area.

Shinebright Limited has submitted a planning application to Waterford City and County Council for 46 houses in Mweelnahorna, Ring.

It will comprise of twelve 4-bed detached homes, two 4-bed semi-detached houses, 28 3-bed semi-detached homes and four 2-bed elderly units.

Fionn Mac Giolla Chuda is a local resident, he says the size of the development is an issue.

"Like any area, you need housing, a place needs to develop bit by bit.

"No estate in the area has ever been bigger than 12 houses, there is a handful of them - maybe three or four.

"It's a Gaeltacht area, we're trying to keep the Irish language going, trying to keep it alive as a community language.

Mac Dara Mac Donncha lives in Mweelnahorna, he fears it would dilute the number of Irish speakers

"When I decided to come here, one of the main reasons was because it was a Gaeltacht area, I wanted to have an opportunity to speak Irish with more than just my immediate family.

"Developments such as this will only dilute and hugely dilute the status and the percentage of the Irish speakers that are in the area."

Councillor Conor McGuinness

Sinn Fein Councillor Conor McGuinness says there is a lot of concern and disquiet locally about the scale of the development"It doesn't really fit in a rural area, it's almost three times the size of the next biggest estate in the area.

"Nobody here is against development, we all want to see more houses here, indeed, there is a real need for affordable and social housing in the area.

"This is a Gaeltacht. We want families to be able to raise their children in Irish, we want families from the area who speak Irish to be able to live here."
